Queen Latifah

Dana Elaine Owens better known by her stage name Queen Latifah is an American rapper actress and singer. Queen Latifah's career in music film and television has resulted in her receiving a Golden Globe award two Screen Actors Guild Awards two Image Awards a Grammy Award Six additional Grammy nominations and an Emmy Award nomination and an Academy Award nomination. Queen Latifah's parents were Lancelot and Rita Owens, both Police officers. Rita was a Newark New Jersey teacher who taught at Irvington High School. Latifah's parents separated when she aged 10 years old. Latifah was raised in the Baptist church, and attended Catholic high school located within Newark New Jersey. Latifah is an Arabic term that translates to "delicate and compassionate". Her aunt granted it to her in the age of eight. Latifah was 5-foot-10" tall power forward on the team at her high school, was always tall. The song she performed was "Home" from The Wiz during a play at her highschool. Latifah began beatboxing with the ladies fresh rap group. Latifah was member of the Flavor Unit - a group of rappers who were gathered around the producer, DJ Mark the 45 King. Mark James, aka DJ Mark the45 King, recorded Queen Latifah's rap Princess of the Posse. The recording was given to Yo! MTV Raps who is known as Freddy. Dante Ross of Tommy Boy Music has signed Latifah upon hearing the track. She released her first single Wrath of My Madness, in the year 1988.
