Winona Ryder - Winona Lauro Horowitz - was born in Winona Minnesota. Parents named her Winona after her hometown. Both her father Michel Horowitz, and mother Cynthia Palmer are authors and editors. Ryder is a Jewish. Ryder believes that her father came from an ethnically Jewish background. Ryder also has a half-sister, Sunyata Jubal. Ryder's younger sister is Uria. Ryder's family relocated from Mendocino County in California when she was seven. The family didn't have electricity. Ryder was a voracious book reader because there was no TV. Ryder started taking acting classes at the American Conservatory Theatre when she reached the age of 12. Lucas the film, which was released in 1986 which was her first big part. Ryder was 15 when she got it. Ryder was bullied at high school. Ryder hoped her career as an actor would be able to help. Unfortunately, that did not take place. However, she kept working towards her goals. Her breakthrough came with Tim Burton's Beetlejuice in 1988. Ryder played successful roles for various films. In 1993, she was nominated twice to win Academy Awards. One of them for her role In The Age of Innocence.
