Whitney Elizabeth Houston was conceived to a musical family 9 August 1993, in Newark New Jersey. Whitney is a cousin and daughter to the singing sensation Dionne. In Newark, Whitney began singing in the church choir as a small child. at the age of 15, she joined her mother in singing background vocals on Chaka's smash Im Every Woman from 1978. In the following years, she was a background vocals for Jermaine Jackson and Lou Rawls and her mother. The quality of her work as the vocalist featured in New York funk group Material attracted the attention of several big record companies, like Arista and Arista, which she signed in 1982 and stayed the rest of her career. Whitney Houston, her debut album that debuted in 1985 was the top-selling album of an unproven singer.
