Whitney Elizabeth Houston was conceived to a musical family 9 August 1993, in Newark New Jersey. Whitney is a cousin and daughter to the singing sensation Dionne. In Newark, Whitney began singing in the church choir as a small child. at the age of 15, she joined her mother in singing background vocals on Chaka's smash Im Every Woman from 1978. In the following years, she was a background vocals for Jermaine Jackson and Lou Rawls and her mother. The quality of her work as the vocalist featured in New York funk group Material attracted the attention of several big record companies, like Arista and Arista, which she signed in 1982 and stayed the rest of her career. Whitney Houston, her debut album that debuted in 1985 was the top-selling album of an unproven singer. A number of hit singles, such as Saving All My Love For You How Will I Know You Give Good Love as well as The greatest Love of All were released on the album. They set her up for a Beatles-beating seven consecutive US numbers one. The album was sold to three million people in its first year, and 25 million globally. The album won her first six Grammys. The 1987 follow-up album Whitney which included the hits The Place Do Broken Hearts Go and I Wanna Dance With Somebody built on her success but it was her 1992 movie The Bodyguard (1992) that made her one of the best-selling artists ever. While the film wasn't very well received, nor did her performance, the soundtrack of her Dolly Parton version I Will Always Love You reached the top spot on both singles and albums charts in America for months. The album sold over 44 million copies. When she had her daughter Bobbi Brown, she got married to Bobby Brown of the ex-New Edition group. In the same year her use of drugs was well-documented and she started using it daily by 1996.
